Microsoft Student Partner program has finally reached to BFM, which shows that also our school has some bright heads and students who would like to make difference and bring technology closer to the campus. What is Microsoft Student Partner (MSP) …

Microsoft Student Partner program has finally reached to BFM, which shows that also our school has some bright heads and students who would like to make difference and bring technology closer to the campus.

What is Microsoft Student Partner (MSP) program? It is an educational program that gathers fun loving and enthusiastic students all over the world for the purpose to become skilled on various technologies and to promote Microsoft products. MSP’s are also expected to apply for the job offerings with the technology giant or to apply on any other same type educational programs.

MSP program started on 2001 and has reached to over 101 countries by today. The program is active among university level students where through close competition only few are chosen to become MSPs for the year. Students have an exclusive chance to take part from special events, academies and are rewarded with the Microsoft software and hardware. After finishing the MSP program, students are able to improve their skills in order to become a Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) or become an Microsoft Certified Trainer.

Since November, first time ever our PR student Kadri Uljas, has become a Microsoft Student Partner.

Why did you decided to apply for the program?

I have been always interested in technology and new gadgets. I accidentally saw the advert in internet and it interested me right away. The good part was that MSP program doesn’t restrict it to technology students, but everybody can try and can have a fair chance.

What was your advantage on the competition?

Actually this year was the first time when they also were searching for marketing students and I was aiming for that part. I don’t know what advantages did I have, cause I didn’t met all the contestants, but I guess it showed out how much I wanted to become a part of this fantastic program.

What did you have to do for entering the program?

First there was a simple application to fill out, where you basically gave all information about your interests in technology and how to combine them. Then followed the interview in Microsoft and after that there was about 10 of us who were applied as candidates. During the candidate period we had to prove ourselves with being an active member and taking part of different events.

What has the program given you and what has been the most remarkable thing you have experienced till today?

The program has given me a bunch of very close friends, who I can trust and who I can communicate on the same level with. These months all have been great- all the seminars, parties and so on.. I couldn’t just pick one out. I am very lucky to have an opportunity to take part of all of them and I know that each and every person who I have met during this period or who I will meet, will play a big role in my future.

What are your plans as an MSP?

Well the most work is still ahead. For my school, I would like our students to get a MSDNA account which means that they are able to use Microsoft software for free. Also I would like to hold some lectures here in order to improve some basic skills that we all need in our computer usage. And for the biggest plan is of course to educate myself and get few Microsoft Certificates done.

Microsoft Student Partner program now applies students from Estonia during all year. In case of interest check more information out here or find Kadri Uljas from the campus.

After the last two interviews we thought that it is time to spice things up. So, this month we have a special treat for you. Some of you may remember him from such blockbuster classes as; Mass Media, Mass Communication Theories or New Media and Society. Some of you may recognize his bold and shiny head lurking around the BFM campus. For those who still do not know who he is, he is the one, the only, Mister Scott Abel. Enough of this chitchat, time to get some answers from the former lecturer.

Introduce yourself shortly?

My name isn’t Shortly. Are you sure you are interviewing the right person? And I was told there would be pie.

Well, if I left any possible doubt in any student of mine, I AM AN AMERICAN. That’s right – capital A, baby. I was raised in the great state of Kansas, which grows more wheat than any place on the planet. I grew up in a small town and played in the wheat fields, which if you think about it, is Superman’s origin story as well.

What does an American want? Democracy! We Americans fight wars to learn geography, you know, so when it was time, I left Smallville to help democratize the hell out of as distant a place as I could find on a map and pronounce. And here I am – ta da.

What brought you to Estonia?

Well, first IRL is letting Russian businessman pay for residency permits, so the entire country has become general admissions seating. So had some business cards made, shaved my head closely, put on my leather jacket, perfected saying “Shto?” and “Da,” and walked right through border control.

So I wake up from my nap during my Stockholm leg in late December 2000 – first time I had ever been to Estonia – look out the window as we’re descending into Tallinn. My first impression was cold, snow and ice. My second impression was – cold, snow and ice. Then we fly over the ugly flats in Lasnamäe and all those recently destroyed greenhouses that existed just outside the airport, and I thought to myself: “When did the flight get re-routed to Grozny?”

How did you end up in our school (BFM)?

Back in the States while looking at the international papers, I saw there was a job at a media school here. I applied, and got accepted. You can see from the local Estonian journalism and media that they are pretty notorious for hiring just about anyone.
Problem was, I thought the job offer was in España at first, but it actually turned out to be Estonia. Oops.

That’s not as bad as my mother, though, who when I told I was going to move to Estonia asked, “Is it in Missouri?” Yeah, mom, right next to Boonville. So I make sure my Skype profile says “Missouri”, just so she doesn’t get worried.

Many students have referred you as their favorite teacher. How did you end up teaching in the first place, and do you have any ideas why the students like you so much?

I got into teaching, because I believe that if you can make a difference in one person’s life – well, that’s really not enough, is it? So I got into a profession where you can hold large groups captive and tell ’em whatever you want. And it really doesn’t matter if it’s true or not, you can just make stuff up out of whole cloth.

Like, “Marconi not only invented radio, he invented macaroni! The era of silent films was preceded by an era where movies had no pictures!” And they all nod their heads.
And I get paid all the same. Is that the life, or what?
If the students like me, that’s a simple function of the fact that most of them fell asleep at some point, and don’t remember what I lectured on.

I think they also find it funny that I fulfill their stereotypes of an absent-minded professor.

Names – I’m terrible with names. If I remember your name by the time you walk across the stage at your graduation, that’s a better badge of accomplishment than if you had won the Nobel. I never could remember the names of even some of my best students over the years, so I tag everybody mentally with the nickname of Mart, even if they’re a girl.
Contrary to the stories, it’s not Alzheimer’s. I have Somezheimer’s. I can be sharp as a tack in the classroom – everything is flying right in formation, like the Blue Angels. And then suddenly I forget I’m in a plane.

Also, I come from the same mental default position as most of the students despite having a generation on them. I mean, I’m 42 but feel 20. Which is good, because when I was 20 I felt oddly burdened, like a 42-year-old. So I can relate. It’s the circle of life, Simba.

I have heard that you are a huge fan of Star Trek and South Park, where did the passion towards those shows come from?

Well, for Star Trek, my devotion is all about Captain James T. Kirk, or to those in the know – TIBERIUS! I mean, growing up, he was definitely my role model. Rushing about – shirt torn, and getting all the hot, green girls. “To boldly go where no one has gone before,” and all that.

So I moved to a land where people put till and hapukoor on everything. I’m surprised I don’t get ice cream that way. On holidays, a delicacy is considered baked blood clots and something close to gelled cat food. How much more alien can you get?
As for South Park, of all the teachers at the Baltic Film and Media School, is there one that looks MORE like a South Park character? I mean, really. I got the roundest head of them all. And no, it’s not because the show features a teacher with a sock puppet, m’kay?

If you remove the hair, it´s a 100% match.

If you could be one of the characters from South Park, who would you be and why?

Butters. It would have to be Butters. Butters is the man. He’s got an apple, and you’ve got one, too. He apparently loves hamburgers. And I can sympathize with a guy who thinks of himself as just a poor bear, mining for coal.

Any tips for the other lecturers, how they could improve or make their lectures more exciting?

Two words – CLASSROOM THUNDERDOME.

Thank you Scott, it has been a pleasure. Once again you have proven to us that being different in a field such as teaching can not only benefit you as a teacher, but also the people in your class. Maybe one day there will be a lecture where over 50% people will actually be awake and remember what happened in last week’s lecture. But until then let´s hope the cold doesn´t get to you and maybe one day we will see you in front of our class again. Cheers!
