03.09.10 - BFM will start offering a new Creative Industries study module

Baltic Film and Media School will start offering a new Creative Industries study module aimed at both MA as well as BA students (limited to 2nd and 3rd year students). The module will be open to students of all Estonian public universities.

The module consists of six different courses that focus both on the public administration of creative industries as well as on the entrepreneurship and management of the enterprises of the creative sector. The module should provide a holistic overview of the modern specifics of creative industries, their roles, prospects and challenges. Teachers of the module come from four different countries - Estonia, Germany, Belgium, Latvia.

29.06.10 - Full scholarships for Baltic Students!

Baltic Film and Media School offers a total of four full financial scholarships for incoming students from Latvia and Lithuania who are admitted to BFM from the academic year 2010/2011.

The scholarships will cover the full tuition fee of the programme that the students are admitted to. Scholarships are provided on the basis of admission exam results.

27.05.10 - Tanel Toom wins BFM's first Oscar

BFM's graduate Tanel Toom's (28) film The Confession, one of the five nominees, won the Oscar for the Honorary Foreign Film award in the 37th Student Academy Awards, first Oscar win for an Estonian filmmaker.

The Confession was shortlisted from a total of 61 film submissions from 36 countries, the highest number ever.

Tanel graduated from the Baltic Film and Media School (www.bfm.ee) in Tallinn in 2005 as a director and went on to study in London at the National Film and TV School. Toom's first short film The Second Coming competed in the official short film programme of the Venice Film Festval in 2008.

The Confession was directed by Tanel Toom, written by Caroline Bruckner, produced by Emily Williams, and completed as a graduation film at UK's National Film and TV School in March this year.

The awards ceremony will take place on June 12 in Los Angeles.

24.05.10 - BFM student film "Jama" awarded in Porto

Jiri Stejskal was awarded as the best foreign director for his documentary film "Jama" on the international student film festival MIFEC at BFM's partner school ESAP (Escola Superior Artistica do Porto) in Portugal.

"Jama" tells a story of one unusual Ukrainian family, making their living in a farm house located in the middle of a big apartment building area in Kiev. Jiri is a second-year student of international master programme in film.

7th international film festival MIFEC, organised by the Cinema and Audiovisual course of ESAP, was held in Porto on May 18-22. 55 films of different genres were screened, representing 17 film schools from 11 countries. The jury appointed awards in 6 categories.

BFM students participate at the festival and accompanying film workshop for the third time - a prize given to the author of the film, which is voted as the best by the audience on BFM film screenings.

14.04.10 - BFM screens best student works from 2009

The selection of best student works made in 2009 will be screened on April 19-21 in S�tiste cinema hall.

Screenings start at 17.30 every evening and last for ca 2,5 hours.
Prizes for audience's favourites will be given out.
Entrance is free. Come and vote for best films!

From March 26th to April 1st, BFM new student films will be screened in CC Plaza Cinema. All the films are based on the novel "P�rgup�hja uus vanapagan" and will be screened in Esotnian.

14.12.09 - The awards of 13th POFF announced!

Kiur Aarma's "Disco and Atomic war" and Asko Kase's "December Heat" were awarded this year's Black Nights Film Festival closing ceremony.

Kiur Aarma, script student of International Film Master Programme, produced and co-wrote "Disco and Atomic war" together with Jaak Kilmi. The film was a winner of International Film Critics Federation FIPRESCI award and got special mention from TRIDENS Baltic Feature Film Jury. Scottisch Leader Estonian Film Award went to "December Heat" directed by Asko Kase and produced by Artur Talvik. Asko is a former student of the International MA film programme of BFM. 04.10.09 - BFM former student's debute December Heat is Estonia's entry for Oscar

Asko Kase�s historical film December Heat has been selected as Estonia�s entry for this year�s Academy Awards nominations in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

Based on true events, December Heat looks at the failed 1924 communist coup in Tallinn through the eyes of a young couple. The film was produced by Artur Talvik (Ruut Films), with most of the budget coming from the Estonian government, to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia in 2008.

The Academy Awards nominations will be announced on February 2, 2010 and the 82nd awards ceremony will take place in Los Angeles on March 7.

Asko Kase is one of three directing students of the first MA film class of BFM who have shot his first feature during studies.

04.10.09 - "Strays" got special mention in Reykjavik

BFM graduation film "Strays", produced by Marianne Ostrat and directed by Sutharsan Bala, got the Jury special mention in New Nordic Voices programme.

For the third year around new promising Nordic filmmakers competed in New Nordic Voices Nordisk Panorama Festival. This years winners were William Johansson and Lars Edman from Sweden and their film "Toxic Playground".

Nordisk Panorama Five Cities Film Festival 2009 was held in Reykjavik September 25 to 30.

24.09.09 - BFM graduation film "Strays" in Varssav and Reykjavik

BFM graduates director Sutharsan Bala and producer Marianne Ostrat first film together, "The Strays", competes in Nordisk Panorama 5 Cities Film Festival in Reykjavik and in Varsav Film Festvial Short Film Competition programme.

Film "Strays" shows us people with different values, traditions and choices, but that all fight for their own worth, and that which they experience as right and wrong. The film manages to speak with cleverness, tenderness, sadness, pain and warmth about cultural conflicts in a way that engages us and touches us.
